Late Work
Up to 1 day late: Grace Period
You may submit any assignment except Project 2 and the Final Portfolio up to 24 hours late without penalty and without any additional requirements. This grace period is provided to account for unexpected events.
Up to 7 days late: Extension Request
You may turn in any assignment except Project 2 and the Final Portfolio up to 7 days late without a penalty. However, you must submit an "Extension Request" within 24 hours of the initial due date. See Extension Request Requirements below for directions and an example document.
This extension is automatically granted; the purpose of the extension request is to help you plan your workload and to keep me informed of your circumstances.
I strongly recommend that you create a reminder for yourself if you take a late extension. Sometimes students forget about this work, since reminders are no longer provided during class or by Canvas.
Over 7 days late
Assignments cannot be submitted more than 7 days late unless there are extenuating circumstances. If you think you need an extension beyond this period, please contact me within the first 7 days to arrange a meeting. The meeting doesn't have to occur within that week, but you must reach out as soon as you know there's an issue. We can meet in person or on Teams to discuss your situation and develop a plan to stay on track during this time.
Extension Request Requirements
See the Up to 7 days late section above for more information on extensions.
Instructions
Create a Word document that includes the Extention Request information:
Your name and the assignment name.
The reason for the extension request: Provide a general explanation of why you need the extension. For example: personal illness, family emergency, time management issues, procrastination, workload, or other personal circumstances.
For medical issues, I don't need detailed medical information, you can just state something "personal illness." Also, please don't hesitate to reach out if you need help with time management and/or keeping track of your work. I've been there, myself, and I might have some suggestions that can help!
The date you plan to submit the assignment: You have up to 7 days after the original due date, but it's important to have a plan for submitting late work to stay on track.
If your new deadline falls within the 7-day window but you miss it, don't worry about turning in a new request. Just make sure to get the assignment in by the end of the 7-day window.
Consideration of other coursework: Since you won't receive feedback until the following week, think about how this might affect your other assignments. If it could impact other work, outline your plan for managing your time and workload. Add a note to explain if you think you'll be able to stay on track or if you have concerns about other assignments.
Upload the Extention Request document to the assignment that you are taking the extension on.
For example, if you are taking an extension on your Community Proposal, upload the Extension Request doc to the Community Proposal assignment in Canvas.
Finish the assignment by your new due date (within 7 days of the original assignment due date) and then upload the completed assignment to the same assignment once you complete the assignment.
For example, you would then submit your assignment to Community Proposal.
Example Extension Request
Jane Smith – Community Proposal
I need to turn this in late due to some personal issues. I just need a few extra days, so I plan on turning this in by Wednesday. I already talked to you about the community I'm thinking about observing this week, so this shouldn't affect my ability to get started on my observations next week.
